Make Smart & Accessible Ingleside Police Station Renovations

Make sure the $100M+ renovation improves lighting, access, and safety for everyone who uses the park.

Where it stands

The ask

  • Enhanced lighting for safety and accessibility
  • Increased access to the community center
  • Increased parking
  • An alternative entrance/exit for squad cars instead of past the playground and tennis courts, like straight onto Ocean Ave or I-280
  • Complete and illuminate the baseball field pathway
  • Repair the baseball field bleachers

Why it matters

In a very challenging budget environment, the city plans to spend upwards of $100M of taxpayer money renovating Ingleside Police Station. We support the renovation, and we want to make sure the city uses this money wisely to:

  • Create a safe and accessible environment. After sunset, large portions of the park become difficult to navigate because of poor lighting. That limits access and creates safety concerns for residents who rely on the park as a key pedestrian route, including the pathways to the station.
  • Build trust through presence and connection. Unlike stations embedded in a vibrant neighborhood corridor, Ingleside is tucked away inside the park, and that separation can create social distance. We see an opportunity to make this a space of daily interaction and mutual engagement.

Tentative project schedule

  • Planning, design & permitting: April 2021 – May 2027
  • Construction: May 2027 – May 2029
  • Move-in and final completion: Summer 2029

Budget: $53–103M (different documents list different amounts), funded by the Earthquake Safety and Emergency Response Bond program.

What we’ve done

  1. 2026

Community activation: over 200 signatures on our petition, plus letters from Friends of Balboa Park, NMTIA, the District 11 Supervisor’s office, and Mission Terrace groups (EAG, CNIA, Mission YMCA, SNA, Slowyuga).

  2. 2025

Attended the NMTIA presentation of plans and commented on access to the community center, access to internal athletic facilities (the current station has an indoor basketball court), and alternative locations.

  3. 2024

Initial asks about the renovation plans.
