Open Boxer Stadium & Create a Vision

Unlock Boxer Stadium for daily public use now, and plan its long-term future.

Where it stands

  1. Not started
  2. Initial request
  3. Focused advocacy
  4. Planned
  5. In progress
  6. Done

The ask

  • Unlock the gates now and make the fields accessible for kids' sports practices and games. Open all day, like Kezar, and aim to at least break even if it doesn't generate revenue.
  • Develop a long-term vision for the facility within a broader park vision. Do we need a stadium here, or would a rec center and clubhouse serve us better? If we do need a stadium (e.g. a facility for girls' sports), what needs to happen to increase use and community benefit?
  • Include renovation in the 2028 bond measure, within the context of a new Master Plan for the park.

Why it matters

Opening Boxer Stadium was the #3 priority in our 2025 Priorities survey (N=200).

  • It's locked to the public and provides basically no benefit to the neighborhood.
  • It generates little revenue: $28k (56% of anticipated) in FY25 and $14k (29% of anticipated) in FY24. And it's expensive to maintain.
  • It isn't attracting the semi-pro soccer it was built for. SFSFL plays most of its games at Crocker and Beach Chalet. Bay FC and SF Glens built training facilities on Treasure Island, Golden City FC is redoing Kezar, rugby and Gaelic teams moved to Treasure Island, and SF City FC plans to use Cox Stadium at SF State.

What we’ve done

  1. Mar 20, 2025

Asked Rec & Park who we would formally ask to make Boxer Stadium available for public use.

  2. Feb 2025

Sent a letter to the Rec & Park Commission and General Manager, and asked at the Commission meeting to open Boxer and create a plan.
