The ask

Renovate the skatepark in Balboa Park as an all-concrete park that reduces future maintenance and increases safety for skaters.

Why it matters

The wooden structure is past its life expectancy, requires lots of maintenance, and is currently dangerous for skateboarders. The park needs an updated design that meets the needs of the broader community, built with modern concrete that lasts longer and costs less to maintain.

What we’ve done

  1. Jun 15, 2026

Awarded a $1.5M Community Opportunity Fund grant for Phase 1. $500k is still needed for the approved expansion. Project start is TBD, but tentative time looks like this: Nov, 2026 kickoff/community input; Feb, 2027 Technical Design starts; Nov, 2027 Bids Open; April 2028 Contract Award; Second half 2029 Opening

  2. 2026

Joined the SF Public Space Collective, with fiscal sponsorship through Contina Impact.

  3. Mar 26, 2026

Applied for a Community Opportunity Fund grant.

  4. Feb 21, 2026

Presented our proposal at the COF workshop and it was accepted.

  5. 2025

SF Parks Alliance closed, leaving us without a fiscal sponsor for fundraising.

  6. Dec 2024

Rec & Park approved the skatepark design.

  7. 2024

Created initial designs and held 3 community meetings (2 in person, 1 online) to review options and gather feedback.

  8. 2023

Initial requests for renovation. We were told we would need approved designs and to fundraise for it.
